Backed is a platform designed to bridge Traditional Finance (TradFi) and Decentralized Finance (DeFi) through the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs). The project focuses on creating on-chain versions of publicly traded securities, such as stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These digital assets, known as bTokens, are fully collateralized tokens that maintain a 1:1 backing with the actual underlying security. For every bToken issued on the blockchain, a corresponding real-world asset is held in custody by a regulated financial institution.
A key aspect of Backed is its adherence to regulatory standards. The platform operates under the Swiss DLT Act, providing a compliant framework for issuing and managing tokenized securities. This focus on regulation aims to offer transparency and security for users interacting with its products. By bringing RWAs onto the blockchain, Backed enables these assets to become part of the composable DeFi ecosystem. The tokens are issued as ERC-20 compatible assets on networks like Ethereum, allowing for seamless integration with DeFi protocols, crypto wallets, and decentralized applications (dapps).
The primary use case for bTokens is their application within DeFi. Users can leverage these asset-backed tokens as collateral for borrowing and lending, provide liquidity to decentralized exchanges (DEXs), or incorporate them into complex yield farming strategies. This functionality unlocks new utility for traditional assets by making them accessible and programmable within the on-chain environment. For crypto-native users, Backed offers a way to diversify portfolios with exposure to traditional markets without leaving the blockchain ecosystem. The platform provides the infrastructure for a transparent and regulated pathway to integrate the value of real-world assets into the digital economy.
