What is Moonwell?

Moonwell is a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol operating within the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) sector. It functions as an open and permissionless money market where users can supply crypto assets to earn interest or use their supplied assets as collateral to borrow other digital assets. The protocol was initially deployed on Moonbeam, a parachain on the Polkadot network, and its canary network counterpart, Moonriver on Kusama. It has since expanded its multi-chain presence, most notably with a deployment on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network developed by Coinbase. This expansion allows users from different blockchain ecosystems to access its lending and borrowing services. The core mechanism of Moonwell involves users depositing supported tokens into liquidity pools. These suppliers then earn a variable Annual Percentage Yield (APY) based on the borrowing demand for that specific asset. Borrowers can take out loans against their deposited collateral, provided they maintain an adequate collateralization ratio to avoid liquidation. Interest rates for both suppliers and borrowers are determined algorithmically based on the real-time supply and demand dynamics within each asset market. Governance of the Moonwell protocol is managed by holders of its native token, WELL. Through a community-driven governance model, token holders can propose and vote on key protocol parameters, such as which new assets to support, collateral factor adjustments, and other risk management settings. In addressing the critical concern of security in DeFi, the protocol has undergone multiple security audits from third-party firms. It incorporates safety features and risk parameters designed to protect the protocol's solvency and safeguard user funds. Moonwell aims to provide a foundational financial service with a user-friendly interface for individuals interacting with the Polkadot, Kusama, and Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystems.
