What is Solayer Restaking?

Solayer is a restaking protocol designed for the Solana blockchain, enabling a new layer of utility and shared security within its ecosystem. The protocol allows holders of staked SOL, often represented as Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs) such as mSOL, bSOL, or JitoSOL, to re-hypothecate these assets. This process, known as restaking, involves committing LSTs to secure additional protocols and services that are integrated with Solayer. By doing so, users can extend the economic security of their staked assets beyond just securing the Solana network itself. The primary function of Solayer is to establish a shared security marketplace. New applications and services, sometimes referred to as Actively Validated Services (AVS), can leverage the collective economic security provided by the restaked SOL. This model significantly lowers the capital and operational barriers for new projects that require their own trust and validation mechanisms, aiming to foster greater innovation on Solana. For participants who choose to restake, this presents an opportunity to earn additional rewards on top of their base Solana staking yield. However, it is important to note that the potential for increased yield introduces new risk factors, including additional slashing conditions related to the performance of the secured services and the inherent risks of interacting with new smart contracts. Drawing parallels to the concept popularized by EigenLayer on Ethereum, Solayer brings the restaking narrative to the high-performance environment of Solana. It aims to enhance capital efficiency by allowing a single stake to secure multiple services simultaneously. In essence, Solayer functions as a coordination layer that channels existing staked capital to secure a new generation of decentralized applications, contributing to the overall robustness and composability of the Solana network.
