What is Virtuals Protocol?

Virtuals Protocol is a decentralized infrastructure designed for the creation, ownership, and interaction of AI agents on the blockchain. These entities, referred to as 'virtuals,' are generative AI agents that exist as on-chain assets. The protocol introduces ERC-7007, a proposed Ethereum standard specifically for Composable AI Agents. This standard provides a framework for defining the properties, permissions, and interoperability of these on-chain AIs, allowing them to be owned, traded, and integrated across different DApps much like other crypto assets such as NFTs. By placing AI agents on-chain, Virtuals Protocol addresses key concerns in the Web3 space regarding digital identity and true ownership of generative assets, shifting control away from centralized platforms. The core technology enables any user to create an AI with a distinct personality and knowledge base, which is then represented as a unique token on the blockchain. This process ensures that the creator or owner has verifiable control over their digital creation. A key component of the protocol is its Justice-as-a-Service (JaaS) system. This mechanism offers a decentralized framework for governance and dispute resolution related to the behavior and operations of the AI agents, aiming to ensure accountability within the ecosystem. The platform enables developers and users to build and utilize AI characters for various applications, from companions to specialized agents within decentralized applications. In essence, Virtuals Protocol aims to provide the foundational layer for an open and permissionless ecosystem of on-chain AI, where intelligence itself can become a verifiable and ownable digital asset.
